The Abakion configurator lets you capture customer-specific product requirements directly on a sales order line in Business Central. You start by creating a sales order and adding the item number for the product the customer wants to buy. You then enter the configuration parameters, such as gear count, color, tire size, and wheel diameter, right there on the order line.

Some parameters have predefined lookups, while others require manual entry. For a color, for example, you type in the code yourself so you can inform your vendor or painter. You can also choose to transfer the configured information to both purchase orders and sales orders.

Creating a sales order with a known item number

The simplest way to work with the configurator is to create a sales order and add the item number. This assumes you already know what the customer is looking for. The customer says they want to buy a specific item, and you know the item number for it.

You insert the item with the quantity the customer needs. After that, you can capture the customer-specific information on the item. The long description might show, for instance, a Nexus 7-gear bike, and you can see the description in brackets is in Danish.

Entering configuration parameters on the order line

Once you start entering the master data information, whether you are talking directly to the customer or taking the details down from the web, you select the parameters on the line. You can change the configuration to match what the customer wants. For example, the customer might ask for an 8-gear bike instead of the 7-gear version.

You can also set other attributes:

  • Color, where the customer requires a specific shade
  • Tire size, such as a smaller tire
  • Wheel diameter, such as a small wheel

Not every parameter has a lookup. For the color, there is no lookup available, so you enter it manually. You can type in a code that you then pass on to your vendor or painter so they know exactly what to produce.

Transferring configuration data to purchase and sales orders

When you set up the configuration, you choose whether to transfer the information to purchase orders and sales orders. This keeps the customer-specific details consistent across the documents that follow, so the right specifications reach your suppliers and stay attached to the order.

This is the most simple way to capture customer-specific information directly on your sales order line.
