When you set up a report layout in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, it is important to understand that your changes are not limited to a single document. The layout setup applies to all documents across the system, so a single adjustment can have a much wider reach than you might expect.

How report layout setup applies across documents

Any change you make in the report layout setup is applied to all documents across the board, not just to the one document you happen to be working on. This is the default behaviour, and it is worth keeping in mind so you do not accidentally change the look of every document when you only intended to adjust one.

Exceptions that limit changes to a specific setup

There are two situations where your changes will not apply to everything:

  • You have connected a specific layout code to another setup.
  • You have connected your setup to a dynamic report ID.

In these cases, the changes follow the specific connection rather than applying globally.

As long as the layout code is blank and there is no other setup in place, all documents will use the changes you make across the board. So if you want a change to be limited to certain documents, make sure you use a layout code or a dynamic report ID to control where it applies.

Q&A

Do report layout changes in Business Central apply to one document or all documents?

Changes done in the report layout setup are applied to all documents across the system, not just to a single document. This is the default behaviour.

How do I limit a report layout change to a specific document?

Connect a specific layout code to another setup, or connect your setup to a dynamic report ID. These connections override the default behaviour and keep the change tied to a specific setup rather than applying globally.

When do report layout changes apply to all documents?

As long as the layout code is blank and there is no other setup connected, all documents will use the changes you make across the board.
