In Business Central, you can control which layout and template a document uses every time it is printed. By setting up default layouts and template codes, you make sure that documents like sales order confirmations always print with the correct setup, without having to choose it manually each time.

You configure this under Dynamic Reports in the Default Layout/Template Setup. The default information can come automatically from the customer card, but you can override it or delete it directly on the individual document.

If you remove the setup, the document stops using the master template code. To reapply it, you look up the report, choose the layout code and the template code, and the document will use that setup when printing.

Setting up default layouts and templates for documents

You can change both the layout and the template for a document in Business Central. More importantly, you can attach these to a document so that it uses the same setup every time it is printed. That saves you from having to select the layout manually on each print.

You manage this under Dynamic Reports in the Default Layout/Template Setup. This is where you decide which layout and template code a given document type should use by default.

Where the default information comes from

On a specific document, such as a sales order, the layout and template information often comes from the customer. The setup on the customer card flows through to the documents created for that customer.

You are not locked to that, though. On the individual document you can choose a different layout, or you can delete the assigned one entirely. If you delete it, the sales order no longer uses the layout from the master template code.

Reapplying a layout and template to a document

If you have removed the setup and want the document to use a specific layout again, you reapply it directly on the document. The steps are straightforward:

  • Look up the report, for example the Sales Order Confirmation.
  • Choose the layout code you want to use.
  • Choose the template code.

Once you have done this, the document uses that setup whenever it is printed.
